2016 Open Water Championships and age group competitions incorporating the Essex Open Water Championships 2016

THE OFFICIAL REPORT

Fabulous day, warm sunny, with temperatures around 27 degrees lake-side and 20 degrees plus in the water; with barely a ripple on the lake to be seen. Glorious conditions which were enjoyed by swimmers and spectators and the army of officials and crews alike.

Good support as usual on the riverbank a few less clubs this year but nevertheless 40 swimmers contested honours this year. Representing Basildon, Runnymede, Maldon Sharks, Rochford, Borough of Southend SC, Chelmsford, Thurrock, Colchester and Canvey Island.

Our thanks to members of the RAF,  the Outdoor center staff, the Paramedic crew and the qualified Canoe Lifeguard members. As well as all the Essex officials who came along on the day and our President Mr Keith Bridge and his wife (and their new edition) plus East Region President Kay McGuire and Husband Neil (first gentleman no less).

Regional medalists from Essex were as follows.

Womens 3k Megan keys 15 Canvey Island Silver

Mens 800m Jude Hills 11 Bor Southend Gold

Mens 800m  Alexander Williamson 14 Colchester Gold

Womens 800m Ana Victoria Anderson Colchester Gold

Womens 800m Caitlin Watson-Dotchin 15 Basildon Silver

Mens 1500m James Bayley 16 Basildon Silver

Mens 1500m Scott Cleaver 25 Runnymede Gold overall plus Gold in the disability event

Mens 1500m Andrew Bell 43 Thurrock Gold

Womens 5K Hannah Mcelroy 16 Bor Southend Silver

Essex swimmers celebrated 6 Gold and 4 Silver medals, 10 medals verses the eleven of last year but we have extended our Gold haul by two medals over the 2015 results.

In the Essex County competition:

Event 1 was the 3000m event.

In the Men’s 13/16 year age group William Neal was awarded Gold and becomes county Champion.

The 13/16 year age group was very well contested. Megan Key of Canvey Island was first home for the Essex girls, winning county Gold. Hannah McElroy Bor. Southend was second and Lucy Bailey Rochford was third.

The 800m event is a novice event and introduces the swimmers to the open water experience and is well contested. It also allows swimmers to compete from the age of 11.

In the 11/12 year age group Bor. Southend’s Jude Hills won Gold and becomes the 2016 County Champion with Matthew Riddle Bor. Southend second and Lennie Wright Canvey Island Third.

In the 13/14 year age group Colchesters Alexander Williamson Colchester was awarded Gold and becomes County Champion with Alfie Williams of Canvey Island in second place.

In the Woman’s 11/12 year age group Bethany Thornton Bor. Southend becomes the County Champion winning Gold, with Millie Piercy Canvey Island second and Ruby Ferrant Bor. Southend Third.

In the Woman’s 13/14 year age group Ana Victoria Anderson Colchester was awarded Gold and becomes 2016 County Champion with Charlotte Harris Maldon Sharks second and Grace Cole Bor. Southend Third

In the Woman’s 15/16 year age group Caitlin Watson-Dotchin was awarded County Gold and becomes overall County Champion in the event winning the Essex County ASA Open Water Cup for 2016.

In the 1.5k event

The boys 12/16 year age group James Bayley Basildon becomes County Champion and wins Gold, Brian Wong Basildon Silver and Nathan Cockcroft Bor. Southend Third.

In the 25/29 year age group Scott Cleaver was awarded Gold and becomes County Champion as well as being awarded a second Gold for the Disability event

Andrew Bell Thurrock won gold in the 40/49 age group and becomes County Champion for the second year in a row.

In the woman’s event Erin Lee collected a county gold medal in the 12/16 year age group. The Basildon swimmer headed home Lucy Bailey Silver; of Rochford and Amber Head also of Rochford collecting third.

Finally in the 5K event

The Men’s 5K: Cavan Beck of Borough Rochford becomes County Champion for 2016 winning Gold and the R.A.Jones trophy.

In the ladies event Hannah McElroy Borough Southend won Gold in the 13/16 year age group.

Bethan McElroy Borough Southend winning the 17/19 year age group and awarded the Colchester Cup in the process.
