Water Polo Update

Although there has been no County water polo, there has been a lot of water polo going on within it.

Chelmsford entered 2 junior teams in to the British Swimming National Age Groups Competition. Both of which did fantastically well considering most players hadn’t played at that level before with a few not having played any competitive water polo before. The ’96 boys team came 7th in the Country. If they had been in the other pool of teams then I believe they would of gone through to the finals.

The ’98 boys team, after not going through to the next round, competed in the plate finals and came 3rd. A great job by all, especially those boys that played who were born in 2000 and had to play up an age group against kids from the ’98 GB squad. A great credit to the County and one that has put us on the map. Chelmsford will be putting together a team for the 2000 NAGs comp in October. The team is effectively a County one as it’s made up of players from Chelmsford, Basildon and Colchester.

I’ve attended 2 tournaments recently. A junior one held in Colchester for kids born 2000 and under. 6 teams entered, 4 from Essex, and it was good to see so many dedicated players and parents in attendance. Basildon won the tournament.

Last weekend I attended the Dave Warriner memorial tournament at the Basildon Sporting Village. There were 5 junior teams, born 1999 and under, and 6 senior teams. It was a great day of water polo with lots of people in the balcony.

I had a meeting with Kevin Wray about setting up an Essex Schools water polo league. Although not directly affiliated with the ASA at present, he wants to see if we can put in place pathway links to the school’s local water polo club for those that want to, to join. The feedback from the schools spoken to and the clubs has been good. I’ll hopefully know more before the next meeting.

Recently, British Swimming resurrected the boys ’97 GB water polo team. Trials were held and Dan Paddon from Chelmsford SC was selected in to the final training squad of 30.
