Disability Swimming Section Managers Report

On the 1st-2nd March 2014, the last DSE Junior and Youth Nationals took place at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.  Twenty nine swimmers from 18 different clubs represented the East Region. The team included 8 swimmers from Essex compromising 28% of the overall team.

Basildon Phoenix swimmers Danielle Hartin (S14), Ciara Tappenden (S15) and Matthew Oaten (S15) all swam well over the weekend. Danielle swam in three events with the 100m breaststroke her highest scoring event, swimming it in a time of (1:20.94) and achieved 686 BDP, Ciara swam in seven events over the weekend with her highest event being the 400m freestyle which she swam in a time of (5:25.24) and received 601 BDP and Matthew swam in four events with his best event for points being the 50m freestyle (28.56) 567 BDP.

Braintree & Bocking swimmer Scarlett Merrell (S10) was another swimmer producing personal bests each race, swimming in five events her best one was the 400m freestyle (5:38.75) scoring 553 BDP.

Runnymede SC were represented by three swimmers; Callum Hodgson (S14), Christopher Pagan (S9) and Charlotte Ryan (S6). Callum swam in four events 50m freestyle (36.40) scoring 308 BDP, Christopher swam in two events and his best event was also the 50m freestyle (40.44) scoring 221 BDP and Charlotte swam in two events with her best event being the 50m freestyle (1:28.66) 71 BDP.

Amy Marren (Romford) also competed representing London and won the overall top female award. Ryan Nicholls (Redbridge) also competed representing London. The 2 swimmers comprised 14% of the London team.

Team East won with 50,518 points more than 7,000 points ahead of North West who came 2nd and then Scotland who were third.

 


East Region Training Event – Hatfield – February 2014

The county was well represented at the recent East Region training day with several swimmers and coaches from around the county attending and benefitting from some excellent coaching from Paralympic Coach Billy Pye.  

 

Essex County Championships – Block B – March 2013

 

Amy Marren competed in several events over the weekend and won the 400m IM in a time of 5.12.63 setting a new British Record in the SM9 class. Kieran Holdbrook (Redbridge) also set a new British Deaf Swimming Record in the 400m FC. Well done to both of them on these fantastic achievements!

 

Disability Water Polo

The group continues to train regularly but is in need of some ‘match’ practice against other teams (junior or beginner level). The coaches are hoping to book some time at the pool in South Woodham Ferrers to give the swimmers a training experience in deep water only.
